I would be very careful about removing that linoleum floor tile. First, I would have it tested for asbestos. I'm not sure when they stopped making tiles with that in it. Then if no asbestos, proceed with your renovation.

If the tiles are 40 years old they may have asbestos in them. Any tile prior to 1978 have asbestos. One way to tell is if the tiles are stiff and measure 9" square they have asbestos in them. If they are do NOT touch them or remove them. You will spread asbestos fibers into the air. The EPA allows asbestos flooring to be covered. It's called "encapsulation". You can lay down cement board over the tiles and then go with your flooring. It will raise the floor so you will need to cut the door molding to slide the cement board and flooring to fit. Also the door bottom would need to be trimmed. More likely you will need a toilet drain extension also.

Stick the loose tiles down again and over tile, but start placing new tiles over where 4 joints meet instead.

There are people who do asbestos abatement If you want to get rid of that old floor first. Might be a bit more costly than the other ideas but it would get rid of the problem permanently
