I have 2 Spider Plants and I just got a kitten. The plants have been outside on my balcony for a couple of weeks. When I got the kitten a week ago I decided to check online if they are harmful to kittens. Some sites say the are harmful and others say they are not. Does anyone know if they are??

Truthfully, there are not many plants that are healthy for pets. You just need to make sure they are kept high enough that the kitten can't get to them. We usually always have cats, we have never had one that tried to eat our plants. Knock them off tables, yes, but otherwise have left them alone with no training them to leave them alone. You just have to watch them to see their reaction to plants. Most of the plants we have are within reach to my son's hybrid cat, except for my succulents that are enclosed in a terrarium and she hasn't touched one in three years, and we have many house plants for her to choose from that would keep her amused.

Honey (my kitten) is a climber of everything. Even when I think there's no way she can get up high, she does. It's funny because she finds ways of getting up higher than I think she can. I have a fake tree and I thought that was going to be my issue with her, but, nope! No interest at all. Thanks your reply =)

I had 1 & my cat used to chew on it & try to pull the babies off. She never seemed to even get sick from it but you can ask a vet to be sure. There are some plants that are deadly to animals.

id play it safe and put the spider plants in a hanging basket, out of reach Of the cats.

  • Harmful if ingested. And the cat would need to eat quite a bit. If the kitty rips a piece off it will not kill him or her, just do not let him or her eat any of it. Some cats are more prone to eating houseplants than others. You were right to look it up. I had a girlfriend that was paranoid about her cats and houseplants. She had a family emergency and they came to stay with me and she freaked out because of all my plants. Nope, I had too many other things that the cats preferred - never even bothered, gave them a sniff and moved on. I have 6 cats myself (and dogs), and several of the plants are not considered "pet friendly" - yet none of the animals even care.

I can not have any houseplant in my house. My cat eats every green thing. Even it is is not toxic he leaves stems sticking out of the dirt. He is an indoor cat so I enjoy plants outside!
