Before you do anything, check your city or county building codes. You may not be able to build and then you'd either be fined and/or made to tear it down. There is also a setback whereby you can't build past a certain footage to your property line.
A lot more than you realize goes into adding a garage. If you don't know what you're doing, find a builder that can help you through the process. You might want to do the painting or trim. You may need: a permit and maybe variance, footings, foundation, framing, windows and doors, roofing, electric, plumbing, hvac, insulation, sheetrock, tape, plaster and sanding, flooring, paint and trim. Then there are required inspections that a builder knows about and when to call for. It's really best to leave the important parts to the professionals.
