If you spray it around your yard it should deter sniffing animals from pursuing your plants. It can be sprinkled without using water and needs to be re-spread after rain, heavy dew or high winds that may have washed or carried it away. But, it is inexpensive so the largest cost would be your time.
I use cayenne pepper that I get in the larger size at Sam's Club, they also have chili powder in that size, but it isn't quite as irritating as the cayenne pepper powder to the nose. You would put it in water to put it on the leaves of the plants to deter.
