Great idea ! Keeps it from getting wet and heavy .

  • For a short period of time, yes. I would not plan on long term storage as it can get moldy in the plastic bags over a long stretch of time.

I guess it boils down to how long you want to store it and how much. A week maybe 2 and you could be ok but any longer you run the risk of rot starting. Also large of mulch have been known to combust.

I try to use mulch as soon as possible, just took a bag of white spotted black mulch back to Lowes. They said it would not hurt the plants, I am taking no chances. It could have been from a diseased tree...just don't know. They said it was a harmless fungus that formed from spores in the bag due to storage and moisture content.

it can become combustible with a small place or stored in a hot area. I agree with Mkleisure55.

If there is a way to decrease potential humidity, it should last a while. Some bagged mulch is not nearly as 'fresh' as the stores would have us believe.

We did, and now cannot get rid of the mold smell...I don't recommend it long term.

Depending on type of mulch some composts with humidity
