Growing up, the Des Moines river was 2 blocks away, and the over flow basin as well. A creek was behind a levee across the street. Lots of puddles in dryer times. The city would use a truck to spray an insecticide, nasty stuff. It actually used a bit of a nerve gas element. There things I’d rather not know....I do know if I get a mosquito bite my arm or other bit area the ithcy area swells to a 3 inch round welt.
There are several plants that you could plant by your outdoor area. Some of them are lavender, marigolds, Lemon grass, citronella plants and geraniums. I hope these natural repellents help you. Good luck.
