If in a bed, 5cm. We plant 3 potatoes inside a old tyre and add another on top when the shoots are 10cm high. In that way, do not have to dig when you harvest in the end.

You can plant potatoes in many types of containers and 1ft seems like a lot of digging.6 inches of cover on top of the potatoes should be enough. You can even grow them in a an old (or cheap) laundry basket thickly lined with newspaper and @ seasons end, dump out the basket and pick out the potatoes.

This year we have resorted to container potatoes and so far are loving it.

Start with your choice of potatoes, cut up based on the eye sections, let that dry for about 24 hours. Plant and cover with about 3-5" soil, water and that's it. When the stems and leaves are 6-8" tall add another layer, they love the "hilling" . Just dump them in the fall and you'll have a nice crop.

We did try the above ground cover with straw, that did not work, something came along and ate all the seed potatoes.
