How do I get rid of black ants that keep showing up in my house?

The best thing I have found for ants is Terro Liquid Ant Bait. Not sure how pet/child friendly, but it comes enclosed in a plastic tub. You cut off the tip and place it someplace where you have seen traffic. The ants eat it and take it back to the nest. This product works! I had left a car parked in my yard for several months under a car cover and it had a MAJOR ant issue when we uncovered it. I put this product under the back seat and left it alone for two days. ALL the ants were gone. Nothing to clean up, no smell, just gone. It will attract the ants no matter where you put it, so perhaps someplace unreachable to kids and pets.

Cornmeal. This works because ants are attracted to corn meal and treat it as food, but they can't actually digest it, causing them to slowly starve. It won't kill a colony as quickly as poison, but it's incredibly cheap, and completely safe to use in a house with pets or small children.

Jeez. Get yourself some peppermint oil to add to your vinegar cleaning solution. Also to a spray water mix. They don’t like peppermint.

Any idea where they’re coming from? Get some Jiffy Cornbread Mix (really) and put outside anywhere you think theres a nest. Eating it is apparently wonderful and deadly.

Another hometalker said she’d done her baseboards with Lemon Pledge and they stopped. They don’t particularly care for citrus either.

Vinegar/water is a great repellent, but has to be repeated -- some 'black' ants feed on grease, others are fond of sugar .... start with a thorough cleaning of everywhere you are seeing them; keep all food crumbs, etc., removed, and try to find where/how they are gaining access to your home; Caulk any obvious cracks, etc; and use a product around the foundation of your home where your pets/children don't frequent you can use a granulated product which you will sprinkle with water that will absorb into the soil and be safe after it drys. Ants are looking for moisture, food and shelter... take it away and they will go elsewhere.

Mix 50/50 borax (20 Muleteam Borax in laundry aisle) with table sugar. This kills several ways: it eats through ants' exoskelton, it poisons those who eat the dead ants, it gets on all ants who follow the trail, it kills the nest. Put in small containers under the sinks, around the toilets, etc.

look online for the correct mixture of borax powder and a sugar mixture to kill ants. It does work. Sugar attracts and the borax kills.

powdered cinnamon always works for me, shake some around the cracks where they come in, they don't like the smell or walking through the powder, kid safe and dog proof.

Terro is the product we use, in the liquid form, since it is dropped onto a small piece of cardboard, you can control where it is placed away from children and pets.
