You dernI would go with glass tiles in a light color and put some lights under your cabinets.
I don't blame you, I find grey a drab color also. I suggest that you use a light color neutral field tile and accent with decorative tiles. Choose a decorative tile that has colors pulled from you countertop. There are quite a few tile stores on line as well as houzz, overstock and wayfair. You sometimes can order samples to see what you like in person. Also, install undercabinet lighting. It gives you task lighting and a soft glow at night. You can also put the lights along the bottom of the floor cabinets too. Make sure your overhead lights throw enough light.
i know they’re non traditional, but a friend with similar problem used slightly Smokey mirror backsplash. Enlarged the kitchen, very chic and clean, No Grout to clean. Under cabinets she used dimmable (Christmas) tube lights.
The smokey, and other, mirrors come in different shades. Research on the web for options.
Please give it real thought. Could look fabulous.
And, if you’re a bit contemporary,silver/chrome blinds to brighten the whole outlook and provide more light andreflection
I have a very similar color pallet in my kitchen and I chose a Champaign glass and ceramic tile from Home depot. It was a fun diy project and I love how it turned out.
If you already have a pale grey and that doesn't brighten things up then the problem does seem to be the lighten because pale grey is almost white which would bounce light off of it yet it's not. Invest in having lighting, cans in ceiling and trust me don't go for some small amount you want them on both sides and over your sink as well. Then the Grey will not look so drag. If you put up a back splash and it doesn't help you will have spent money on something that you really didn't need. Lighten and under cabinet lighten as well.
Yes, better lighting and reflective blingy glass tiles.
