This week Hometalk’s challenge is to Furnish Outdoor Spaces. To get a jump on this project I gave a metal chair a bright makeover.
I found this chair at a thrift store for $2. Here she is in all her dilapidated glory:
I began this project by flipping it upside down onto a coffee table and unscrewing the cushion from the base.
Then I took the base outside to spray. I had Rustoleum Hammered Copper Spray Paint on hand so that is what I used.
Between coats of spray paint, I worked on the cushion. I purchased bright outdoor fabric at a thrift store for 50 cents and centered the cushion over my favorite part of the print.
I then used a Stanley Heavy Duty Staple Gun to tack the fabric onto the base on the underside of the cushion.
At the corners I simply folded pleats inward to round them, stapling as I went.
To finish the cushion I trimmed the excess fabric about 1/2” an inch from the staples all around the cushion.
Easy peasy! I LOVE how quickly you can redo a cushion with a staple gun. ❤️
After one more coat of paint on the base and a few hours of dry time, I screwed the cushion back on to complete this project.
It’s really that simple!

If the wood needs replacing, what type of wood do you recommend using?

Good afternoon! Regarding the staple gun and staples: 1) what's the specific make & model of the stapler? 2)What is the size of the staples you used for the cushions? Thank you!

  • Love the material. I'd kinda like to paint the chair black. I think it would make the cushion pop more. Great find!

Unfortunately, In Canada you would never even get a used spool of thread for 50cents let alone a beautiful piece of material like that. You are all so lucky not to live in Canada! Happy Day to all of you DIYourselvers

I’m sorry to hear that. Maybe watch for a huge lot of fabric/crafting supplies on eBay? Have a great day too!
