Is there a “trick” to getting molded laminate off kitchen doors? T

i have ALOT of upper/lower cabinets and they were covered with that sheeted/molded laminate material. I want to remove it all and paint my cupboards! Has anyone done this and is there a “best” way to remove it or will it come off in bits and pieces from being glued down? Thank you!!

A link attached may help with the process. Also try youtube you may find others have documented their experience. Good luck

You may be ahead to keep the laminate on rather than removing it. Rough it up with a medium coarse sandpaper, then a finer one and then paint as you wish. Here's a link providing the steps. https://www.bunnings.com.au/diy-advice/paint/how-to-paint/how-to-paint-laminate-kitchen-cabinets

Thanks for the awesome link Janice! Mine, unfortunately needs to come off for my slightly ocd tendencies) it’s not in good enough shape to go the paint over route :( They put it on long ago and there are too many imperfections.

I’d be tempted to try A hair dyer to soften the glue.

I have never really found a good work around. I have heard pulling or breaking a small amount off then using heat from a hair dryer on the glue, or paint thinner like goop off. I have not tried it though. The other option that might be a bit less work is to sand it down (power palm sander would work best) then after you have as somewhat rough edge prime and paint over it. Might not be as smooth a finish as you were hoping for but it would look ok.

Thanks Tammy! Unfortunately it needs to come off. There are several areas that it had chips or cracks and impossible (I’ve tried) to patch. Will put both your ideas on my “try” list!!
