we put in a gas fireplace without the need of a chimney. Much for efficient than a wood fireplace and warms the room quickly. We also put a ceiling fan to disperse the heat equally around the room. Was a great addition to the house.

A wood surround to hide the brick would be my first choice.

I would consider painting the brick white and either spray painting or switching out the fireplace insert (The brass looking metal in your picture). If you decide to spray paint the brass, I would chose a black matte finish that is made for high heat surfaces. Good luck! Let us know what you decide.

Paint the brass doors with black high heat spray paint and paint the brick white. It will look so fresh, clean and updated. Classic look.

In my opinion the fireplace doesn't have a defined style. I would take away the brass and glass screen and the brass piece on the floor.

Then I would use a color wash on the brick. A creamy taupe, slate or even black will give the brick a nice update. Use a dry brush so the brick shows through. A nice coat of gloss paint on the wood mantle in the same color will pull it together.

As as for the floor surface I would like to see a handmade tile surface to add an arts and crafts look.

A black iron iron fireplace screen would look quite nice and andirons in a style that you like.
