Found this web site, they say it's a virus and no cure. http://www.nzdahliasociety.50megs.com/viruses.html
  • My first question to you is: do you find any aphids around your dahlias? Aphids transmit mosaic disease and this means you need to remove and throw away the infected plants. From the pictures that is what this looks like and I even looked up in my old gardening book if there is a 'cure' but there is not. the disease will spread and infect all dahlias. If there are no aphids and no signs of pests, then I am leaning towards the soil, fertilizer or even water.

Dahlia's are tuber plants they must be dug up and divided every year winter over in the garage with clean pot and new dirt. Next year you have double the plants. I wouldn't start them from seed I'm a experienced gardener so to get the beauty you want buy a bag at wall mart plant them in a different location and begin again. I think you might want to treat everything in the flower bed at one time in the spring after new flowers are up. Look in the gardening section for solution that cover many types of bugs and use that once a year and you will never have any problems. This plant does not have aphids but spot mold. Discard this plant if in a pot scrub pot clean if in the garden bed remove some soil add compost an some red worms and start over. I'm a big dahlia fan and I especially like the dinner plate ones.

I agree with other posters that is more than likely a virus. Could be from the seed, the soil or airborne. The only way to ensure it doesn't spread to other plants is to throw it out - however, I would try one thing first: isolate it from other plants and spray it, saturate it all over with NEEM oil. NEEM is a 3-in-1 product that is an insecticide, miticide and fungicide, meaning it will kill bugs, mites and fungus. It is organic and won't harm you or your pets. It's worth a shot to keep from throwing it out. I love NEEM and it is usually my first choice for something like this because it can be difficult to determine if it is a fungus or a bug.....NEEM kills both so it might work. Good luck!

@Leslie Long Oh, and the best thing about NEEM is that it won't kill any beneficial insects either. Ladybugs, Mantis, Bees.....all safe :)
