Getting to bare wood would help to determine the damage from water or whatever has created the mold.

Minimal damage. It's basically just deintergrated the paint but not the wood.
What's your recommendation on paint to use.

P.s. the wood is great. The water hasn't soaked in to it yet. Because the room is not in use yet I've left a couple windows open every night, which has dried it out.

What is an ideal paint to use?
Would I need a base coat also?

Use a mask and don't sand around children in case the paint has lead in it. Clean dust up with a damp sponge-not a vacuum. Sand the wood until it is smooth. 150 sand paper is fine. Fill any cracks with wood filler that can be sanded and painted. Sand smooth. Then paint with a primer made to go over mold. It should not be water based. Zinsser makes a variety of primers for different purposes. I believe the one you want is Zinsser BIN stain blocking and sealing primer. It is oil or laquer based. Ask for the one that will cover mold. If it doesn't say it kills mold you need to kill the mold before priming. Make sure the wood is very dry before priming. If it feels cold it is damp. Then paint with a good latex enamel. Semi-gloss is usually used for window and trim. Dirt washes off more easily than satin. It also reflects light better than less shiney paint. Good luck.
