Vinyl tiles are inexpensive and easy to install yourself. Either the square tiles or the long planks. And yes I would check to see why the linoleum is coming up.
I'll agree that vinyl tiles have come a LONG way and are easy to lay yourself. You will want to rip up all that old linoleum though and make sure and use vinyl tile glue even though they do have stick on the back of them.
