If your kitchen is small and limited in space, you are probably like me and can use more storage as well as another work area. This is the perfect project to add storage and work area without filling up the floor space! It is easy, practical, and looks so cheerful in any kitchen.
My friend Michelle is always finding free broken pieces of furniture thrown out on the curb for garbage pick up. This time it was a broken microwave stand. With a little paint and creativity it became a beautiful island for a small kitchen.
First, she removed the top and re-secured the sides and bottom. She sanded it down and secured the drawer and shelf guides.
She sanded everything including the drawers and shelves as well as the top and reapplied the top of the microwave stand.
She tiled the selves, painted the drawer fronts and trim in cheerful watermelon, then painted a neutral color on the sides and bottom trim to match the tiles on the drawers. Hooks went on one side for utensils or potholders.
For the working surface, Michelle attached ceramic tiles left over from another project. You need a little knowledge of laying tiles for this work area top. It is not hard, but it does take a little practice with the grout and tiles, especially if the end pieces need cut to fit.
Here's one finished side.
Here is the opposite side with a towel holder. The only change I might make is to add rollers on the bottom to be able to move it as needed. You can get rollers that have brakes as well.
And here is the surprise, a chalk board on the back. This can be done with chalk board paint available from a home improvement store. The paint for the chalk board was also left over from some file cabinet drawer sitting stools/toy storage she made last winter.
