Our home is 46 years old and I’m just tired of how it looks. Thought about painting the bricks but someone said I would have to prime, then use something else and then paint. Wow, I’m wore out just thinking about that.

Though it is a lot of work, painting is likely the best solution of the two options you are considering. Here's a link on the painting process. https://www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-paint-brick/

You might also want to consider that the vinyl option may devalue your home's worth quite a lot. Brick is considered an upgrade while vinyl is not.

If you think painting it yourself is too much for you, why not get an estimate to have it done by a professional paint company. Also, find a vinyl company and ask them for an estimate and compare the two costs.....remembering the devaluation of a home with vinyl versus a brick facade. Good luck with your decision.

We also have a brick home. What you want to do is use masonry stain on the brick. You do not want to use paint. Paint sits on the surface and will eventually flake off. Stain penetrates and does not flake off. You do not need to prime. The stain goes directly onto the brick. We stained ours over 9 years ago and it still looks like new. We have both 100 degree temperatures in the summer and snow in the winter. We did it ourselves and while it was work, 10 years later it is still done. They make semi-transparent stain which lets some of the color of the brick through or solid stain which covers your brick completely. Hope this helps.

I say maybe but you probably have to build a sturdy wood frame around outer edges n a few in middle for support, I think painting sounds out same time consuming.. lol

Actually we live in a very large community with many homes and some of them are brick...over the years quite a few of the homeowners have had their exterior brick painted and the results are really very nice...so it is possible to do this, but all of the brick homes have been done professionally as most are two story and require much balancing on tall ladders which most people are not used to doing..very dangerous....I would suggest that you get some quotes from a painting company to see what your costs would be and you can discuss main house color, window wood shades and front door color to pop out from the main body color....

How about changing what the house wears, rather than the brick. Change the trim; put in a new front door; add new shutters; change the walkway up to the front door; remove old shrubs and add new that flower vibrant colors. The house will look so different you will not recognize it!

I would think twice about painting brick. this is a forever project. painted brick will have to be maintained and repainted every few years. You can get estimates to clad the brick in vinyl, but my first choice would be to change the door color and maybe the trim too - gutters? shutters? easier and will still maintain the brick siding.

Rethink painting brick, because once you do it, you can never go back, and will have to paint every few years, which can get expensive. We once had a house where the brick front and chimney had been painted, and it was a constant repainting chore. I agree with others that you should try painting the front door, window trim and/or shutters, get new house numbers, porch light, etc. You could also try some new landscaping--that can give a real lift to the front of a house.
