It looks like the grass needs fertilizer and more watering. You may also want to overseed if the timing is right in your area.

    Indeed patchy and burned.

Fertilize, water and good grass seed, consult you local nursery for a product that would work best. Or another idea is to get the help of your local agriculture agency. When you mow, leave the clippings in place, do not bag them for compost or discard, that will help reseed.

I would aereate the grass first as that helps let the seeds go down in ground it makes holes in grass and buy topsoil and cover area where u put seeds

micronized clover, hardy to summer heat and winter temps, also adds nitrogen to the surrounding grass.

Mix clover seeds with fine dry sand and spread with a commercial hand held seeder. Make sure you plant when you expect a week of rain and overcast weather.

i have learned so much over the years from being a city girl to a country girl. I have planting to do myself but waiting for the beginning of fall. My husband likes the Penstate mix of grass seed, living in Northern PA. Just throw your seed where needed and I throw some garden soil over the seed, lightly. While at a garden center, ask for a bag of lime with that seed. Waiting for the spring to plant mine, you can buy some stray over t he patches so the birds do not eat the grass seeds that you planted. Best of luck

I agree with scratching the surface a bit to loosen the soil and remove the dead stuff a bit, get the Earth Turf seed mix which includes clover which stays green in summer and produces lovely little flowers in the lawn to feed pollinators. Good advice above to put the seed down when it's going to rain for a few days. I did this -- birds ate some of the seeds but enough took and now my grass is green and patches filled. No fertilizer or chemicals of any kind needed. No water either after it gets established.
