Home depot has stick on stuff you can use a lot cheaper and you can remove with hair dryer when ready to replace.

I think you are asking what to use on the wall, behind the tile...?
Most home improvement stores carry a concrete backer for wall tile... on a wall 1/4 inch would work well.... BUT... do some research at the home improvement store AND a specialty tile store... get information and then make your choices from there... what you use will depend on the type of back splash you choose.

If you already have walls in place and no backsplash, as long as the walls are in place, you should be able to tile right over the existing walls. We have done that. We have also ripped up existing tile and installed new backerboard and new tile! You can see exactly how we did that here: https://simplydesigning.net/kitchen-remodel-reveal/

Cement board backer is not used for kitchen wall backsplash. Usually done directly to wall. You can purchase premixed mastic to affix tiles, bagged mortar which you will mix or tile mat set, a double stick roll adheres to wall and tile. In either choice add tile and grout after. The mat method can be grounted right away the other options require 24 hours to dry first. Hope this helps

Just go directly over you existing wall. No need to put anything on the wall.
