How can a woman who's intimidated by the thought of cutting this fine piece of wood create something useful...I thought I was able to part with it, but quickly realized how sentimental this piece of furniture is to me...I would like to see it reincarnated as perhaps a kitchen island and a bedroom storage bench. Can u please help me save the life of this dresser. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Can't Let Go

Please give me suggestion how to turn this dresser into a kitchen island and bedroom storage unit, decided this piece of furniture can be very useful .

Clear it out. Take top drawers out. DIY or ask handy friend to remove Top flat piece. Then cut the tall sides and back off dresser. Remove the top two drawer spaces too. Sand the remaining top to remove Any bumpy areas. Place top(first piece you removed) on the remaining part of dresser and secure it(probably with wood glue and screws). sand it down if need be, paint to match decor.

Let me guess..are you using an I pad? Mine does that all the time. sand, remove the sanding dust with rubbing alcohol it doesn’t raise the grain like water does. If you use paint...prime the piece first. If you use a dark color the primer can be colored to your paint color....if you want to do a distressed look.....practice on scrap wood. You can also stain the wood and top with a clear coat.

Wow.....I Love it too! My thought is 2 useful pieces, but not sure I could tear it up as much as above ^ mentioned. The top piece (does it have to be an island?) was thinking a buffet or entry table! and the bottom a bench for sure! Wow this could be amazing if you have DIY time. Are you a wood painjter or do you like the wood?

About 30 years ago I bought a piece that had been in a kitchen and made this penisula and a dressing table from it. I paid $60 for the unit. A man was sort of remodeling my kitchen and used the base cabinet (putting a new top on it) The original top which was a long oval, was turned into a dressing table by my husband. The base was unsightly so I made a large oval cloth. Used that for many years and the "peninsula" is still going strong but the drawers while extremely useful, are not smooth operating like a newly made piece would be.

Emily, I had the same sticking drawer problem with my 1944 kitchen. Several years ago I decided to remodel. Other than being UGLY, there was nothing else wrong the original cabinets/drawers, so I

just had them refaced and slides from Home Depot/Lowe’s installed on the drawers...Unbelievable difference!
