I'm guessing that the grass doesn't grow all of the way around the tree? Why not plant flowers that love sun and shade around it then you don't have to worry about the grass. And less mowing!
Is the tree 'on' your patio, or is it growing over your patio or through your patio stones? A picture would help us understand what the problem is.
