Research, research, research. Refinishing old wood floors is a HUGE task! You'll need to rent a floor sander from one of your local home and garden shops such as Home Depot or Lowe's to sand them down to the original finish. If you do rent one, they should be able to help explain it in more detail as well as pick out your sanding pads. This is hard work and takes a lot of time so it might be best to hire it out.

Do not, repeat: DO NOT rent a flooring drum sander and try to do this yourself. It takes a lot of skill and you almost certainly ruin your hardwood. If the floors are in reasonable condition and just need new topcoat, you can rent an orbital flooring sander and do it yourself. If they have gouges and an excessive amount of wear or other damage, hire a pro.

If you have a sander or rent one, good knee pads, and them time, it is a lot of labor but not hard to know how to do it. Keep the sander going the same direction as the wood grain. Wipe down, and sand again, until all finished is removed. Then refinish with polyurethane, let dry between applications (like 24 hrs) and use 2 or 3 finishes, depending on need.

Ken is right. Drum sanders require knowledge in how to handle them properly and a substantial amount of physical strength to control.
