One way is to use painters tape and cover the glass with either newspaper or plastic. Wishing you the best.
When we replaces our storm door, I covered the windows and screens with newspaper folded just shy of covering it and covered the rest with painters tape to keep the paper on the window. It worked really great, no scraping at all.
I just scrape window with an razor blade after I'm done.
Many of the TV DIY guys recommend a liquid masking product.... you just paint it onto the window glass... spray paint... and peel off the masking material.... most home improvement stores should have it.
Cover window with plastic and hold it on with painters tape.
Cover with newspaper, and painters tape.
You can get rolls of masking paper with painter's tape attached. I use this professionally
