2 Part question. Vegtables & flowers during summer in SWFL?

I want to grow more vegetables and or flowers in SWFLA. With the heat and sun pretty tricky. Any suggestions would be great. I also saw some people that built a type pf tent over garden and it seems to help quite a bit.
