If it is done well, and updates the look, it will not ruin the value. If you are unsure of your skills, and are seriously concerned about the value, I would hire a professional. It sounds easy, but they need to be prepped well, and you need to use the right paint.

I have a 70's redo house and have solid wood cabinets from that era. To be a cleaner look and easy cleanup, I use Behr exterior latex on just my cabinet doors taking them from dark brown to beige. When I found out how much it was to gut all the cabinets out, I chose to paint instead. To make it an even cheaper fix. I painted my hardware, also, in spray enamel and redid my old countertops with a broken ceramic tile. I saved a bunch. I love the change with a craftsman look.
