Roses are not climbers in the fashion of vines. They have no tendrils or aerial rootlets, and they don't twine around a support. You must have a trellis or a fence with wide openings so the canes can be woven through as they grow. You can plant against a wall as long as the area gets sun for at least 6 hours each day. Just as important is having a spot with good air flow as leaves that stay moist are more likely to contract a fungal disease. Powdery mildew is common in humid southern states even when a rose is in full sun. So don't think you made a mistake if your rose experiences a problem. Just treat the problem as soon as you notice it. Here is an article that explains training roses in more detail: https://www.wikihow.com/Train-Climbing-Roses
