You need a good ground cover, and vines are great to hold the soil in place. Kudzu, ivy and creeping Charlie are good, but keep them trimmed from the rest of your lawn. Best wishes ☺️
Depending on what you would have asked, soil amendments like compost work wonders.
I live in Northern Arizona and have that clay like soil, too. When it gets wet it could suck the shoes right off your feet! Ha ha Maybe some of the tall grasses that you don't have to cut will live in it but it will need to be treated with good soil, first. Maybe a path of pea gravel will work in the middle. I have a neighbor that put large pavers in rows and planted those grasses in between the rows. Good luck!
Since the dirt / clay is almost like rock 75 - 90% of the time, have you thought of tiering with raised beds? You'd run a main drip irrigation and fan off to each raised area. To help keep snakes away, use corrugated Tin for walls and either 4x4's or metal corner like posts for corners to connect the walls with screws, you could line the inside with heavy painter's drop cloth or Black thick plastic. You didn't say the approximate area size so I would do a rough sketch for the layout & remember the boxes don't have to be super sized, they can be any shape & size you wish. I heard somewhere that snakes don't like Garlic - interesting. I would say call your local Ag office, zoo or Wildlife org. . Good luck & hope you find your answers!
God Bless P.S. I used the Tin on the bottom as snakes can't get through so easily - I hate snakes & scorpions !
