How do I apply chalk paint?

I am chalk painting an old silverware chest and converting it to a jewelry box to prevent silver 10 4. My base color is light silver grey chalk paint and the other is black chalk paint. How can I apply the aerosol can of black chalk paint to achieve the look of a sophisticated pattern or to resemble shabby cheek?

If it has a finish sand it a little so the paint will adhere and paint away like any other paint project happy crafting!
