Have glass or plexiglass glass cut to fit the top of the nightstand. Lay your fabric underneath top with glass. Can easily be swapped out on a whim! Post cards, photographs, anything flat can easily be displayed and protected.

i'm with Naomie- it will keep your options open to change as the seasons change. Plexiglas can be expensive and difficult to cut, i'd do a safety glass for the top. if you don't want to cut it yourself , your local lumberyard may be able to help you.
If you want fabric on the sides and drawers of the nightstand, simply mod podge it on. You could also use contact paper.
