Make it either a dining area with a little table and chairs, or a sitting/conversation area with some comfy outdoor furniture and a little table to hold drinks. If it's not covered, consider one of those offset umbrellas to shelter the whole area. Add a pretty planter or two at the corners, filled with seasonal flowers for your area, if you like.

Place bbq on patio, arrange seating around that, don't forget a table and/or end tables, lighting, plants in pots, area rug, electrical outlets, music, etc.

Personally, I would do all of the above, or some. This would include a comfy chair, a table for my wine glass and book, and view it as my hiding space.

If it’s unused, they’ll never look for you there.

I used to do that in my living room. It never occurred to them to look for me there.

  • No patio should ever go unused! I am out on mine unless it is freezing cold (a very rare occurrence), or too windy. I have seating, table and chairs for dining, 3 bbq grills, pots with plants and flowers and a 9' market umbrella. I could live out there if it wasn't 100°+ right now. Morning coffee, lemonade in the afternoon, glorious! Get some much needed vitamin D from the sun.

What you do with it... depends on how you live and use your outdoor space... do you need more outdoor storage, a place to grill, would you like a fire pit area... or just a place to sit and read?

You could do a container garden.

Turn it into a " secret garden " patio, bring in some potted plants, have fun, put things you enjoy looking at out there and use it to read your latest or your favorite novel.

Thanks for all who took time to weigh in. All of your suggestions are grea! It’s an awkward spot because it’s a long and narrow (like a bowling alley- flanked by a shed and overgrown shady corner). I used to bbq there, however I felt so isolated from the group while entertaining. I have incorporated potted plants and a very small garden (shady most the day)...I do ambition to put a waterless pond in the overgrown corner; maybe once the water feature is in place I will have more vision. Have a wonderful day!
