What is the best way to start and plant a flower bed around a tree?

I'm making numerous flower beds in a wooded grassy area but am lost on how to start. I know I have to get rid of the grass but I don't exactly know how so that it doesn't keep coming back. I'll be transplanting plants from my other overgrown old beds to this new one. Really could use some ideas.

The only time I did this I built a raised bed around the tree with landscape timbers, filled it with potting soil and then shade-loving plants like begonias and impatiens plants, and dusty miller. It looked great.

I second this. Raised bed around a tree is the only real possibility for success.

Too many roots and greedy tree for nutrients.
