Distressing Decor to Match Your Home

I love finding items at garage sales or receiving hand-me-down decor from family, but it doesn't always match with my color or decor. Here are some ways that I take items and transform them in an afternoon.
When my grandmother passed away, I was given a set of brass colored keys to hang in my home. I loved the details, but the bright brass was too bold for me.
I took one of the bigger keys and spray painted it. I used Rustoleum's Oil Rubbed Bronze - one of my favorite colors.
Using a bit of steel wool, I lightly scuffed the edges to reveal some of the brass underneath.
Take off as much or as little as you want - it's your piece, so make it custom to your space.

I love how the gold pops against the wall.
For the smaller key, I wanted to do the opposite - keep it mostly brassy gold, but use antique glaze to give it an aged patina.
Now this next step is very technical. I apply my antiquing glaze with my finger.

Okay, seriously, I just couldn't find my brush, but my trusty ole digit did the trick.
Allow it to dry.  I waited overnight, but I'm sure it would be ready sooner.
I love how it looks. And it's so simple to do!
It's a nice compliment next to the distressed key.

You really have a great eye for interior design. That eye-catching wall vignette you designed is simply stunning. Without perhaps realizing it, you transformed the wall that juts out above the stairs by redirecting the flow by displaying the keys straight then upward. You clever girl! My favorite Home Talker.
