I moved to a new house and have a crab apple tree. What can I expect?

The fruit will be high up; how do I get them or do I wait until they fall? Does it need pruning? Can I plant anything (what?) under it? I want an outdoor clothesline; this tree is in a perfect spot for one attachment. How can I use it - some kind of bracket around the tree? I don't think boring into the trunk for an attachment is a good idea.
