What is the best way to paint over old ( paper, not vinyl ) wallpaper?

I have a half wall covered with wallpaper that is paper, not vinyl. I'm afraid the paint might soak into the paper and I'd have something akin to wet newspaper globbing.

Don't paint over paper, you're right, the paper will soak up the paint and it's a mess. Try removing the paper by wetting it with a sponge soaked in warm water and fabric softener (one-third cup fabric softener to two-thirds cup of warm water). Let it sit a few minutes, then scrape. Some people say start at the bottom and work up, scraping upwards (because wallpaper is applied top down?), but I haven't seen that works better.

It is best to remove the wall paper. I use warm water with fabric softener in it. Spray an area let it soak in to make it easier to remove.

Please don't paint over old wallpaper. Yes, it can be done, but you'll be able to tell you've painted over it (seams, texture). Plus, when the glue gives on the wallpaper, you'll have to do the job all over again. Do it correctly and remove the wallpaper.
