Ceiling lights, I have 3, 3-100 watt bulb lights in my hall. It's very bright. You can run rope light along the top edges of the walls. You could even get a photographers light box and mount it on the wall. You'll have to diy a frame to cover the writing along the edges, but you can make a unique pieces. You could do just about anything on and around it.
If your hall Has the room try a small table, dresser or nightstand with one or two lamps.
