First off , Cranberries or Cranberry Viburnums? Assuming Viburnums , prune right after flowering , but as with all plants never ,or seldom , use hedge shears , use hand pruners ! Shearing creates all new growth along the top , hence blocking any light from getting to interior of plants . As a result all foliage in middle of plant will lack leaves and look ugly . Randomly prune some "exterior" branches back allowing light to reach interior foliage . This is the case when pruning all plants . Also prune the top of plants just a bit more narrow (not vase shape) at the top , allowing sun to reach the bottom of plants and causing deadwood at the base . A bit more narrow doesn't mean Tee-Pee shape , just ever so slightly .
