Garage is a cluttered mess....where to start?

First, take everything out that you can. I know that sounds overwhelming, but start early in the morning. Put your two cars back in when it's empty and draw a chalk line so you know where your cars will be. The room that is left is what you have to work with. Think, hang, hang, hang. Anything that you can hang will be off the floor. Then lawn equipment, where to put that, chalk line it as well and take it back out. Shelves will be your best friend, try to keep them low enough so you can reach everything. If you can afford to purchase the metal shelves with wheels, if not the plastic ones from HD or Lowes are very sturdy and hold a lot of weight. If no room for stand alone shelves, start putting them on the wall. Try to put like items together on the shelves. All car stuff on one shelf, then storage items on another and so on. They also make shelves that you can hang from the ceiling. I've posted a picture of our garage. We don't keep our cars in there and our lawn equipment is in a shed in the back until winter then we bring it in to the heated garage. We use lots of bins and buckets for storage as well. measure the interior of your garage carefully, width, depth and height. Park cars inside and measure the floor space they take up. Also space around needed for opening doors and moving around cars. That gives you the remaining floor space, thus the remaining accessible wall space. There is always more space available than people think. Pegboard is great for hanging things, ditto rafters, most used things should be stored in most accessible space, a wooden rack system may work for storing golf bags so they don't fall over and are contained. Different depth shelves can hold storage boxes or narrower things like paint cans etc. Look at individual items and ask yourself "where and what are the storage needs of this item" It sounds silly but it can work.

Start with one corner and work your way out until the entire garage is organized.

You could place some peg board in easily accessible locations to hang the smaller stuff. If you have garden tools too then put up some hangers just for them. If you can keep things off the floor it will look much better.
