After many trips down to the beach, we have accumulated many shells and wanted to do a project making use of them.
The first step was to clean the shells thoroughly. I mixed a bowl of boiling water and a cap-full of bleach. I kept the shells submerged in the bowl for about a day, then rinsed them with soap and water. This killed all the bacteria and make the shells the brightest white they were going to be.
Next, I sprayed the shells with a polyurethane glaze. This glossiness made it possible to draw on it with fine tip sharpies.
We looked up henna art designs on the internet and used fine tip sharpies to draw them on the shells.
Here’s a few shots of the many different ways we colored them.
All with different colors and designs.
Even when they didn’t come out perfectly, they still looked good.
Now that we’ve got a lot of them, I’m interested in putting them together in a fun way.
