My daughter & son-in-law have a very large garden and 3 outhouses/sheds, 2 of which are coming down.
It's been left to grow wild for about 10 years (oh boy, it's like a jungle out there). Part is mainly overgrown weeds, part orchard and the rest is the dreaded ivy!! How can we safely get rid of the awful stuff?
We've been hacking away, but it's all over all sheds, the walls, a trellis, just everywhere.
Can it be killed off without harm coming to animals and children? We live in the UK.
Thanks in advance.

try smothering the unwanted plants with heavy black plastic.

If only it was that easy! The ivy is literally EVERYWHERE. Up walls, on the sheds, growing over to the neighbours gardens....But, I will pass on your advice to the family! Thank you. xx

I have found vinegar works on a small scale but it is harmful to your soil. I killed off English Ivy by setting down newspaper and laying it down, placing a decomposing liner over that and adding more soil to level it out. Good luck with your clearing, because it sounds like a lot.

I was thinking renting a brush hog would make this a much easier task.

Thank you for explaining that for me, Redcatcec. I think we are going thirds on a wood chopper/chipper, and that will get rid of a lot of the unwanted wood. I'm sure we can put the sheds thru this, too. And I'll try anything on that blasted ivy!!

I read that goats will get the job done!

I'd love to let a couple of goats loose in there. Now the weather is getting cooler we hope to get out there more and tackle it as a team!
