You can build a shade cover over the top... or it there is a roof... check into the product they use for foam roofing something like "Cool Seal"... You could also add a layer of exterior foam insulation, plywood on top... then an asphalt roofing material.

  Not really. Use trivits for anything hot or cold to prevent further damage. Or have a piece of glass or plexiglass cut to fit the top of your table, then no worries! On plexiglass a really hot pot will melt the plastic, which is why most people opt for glass.
