Why does the inside of my dishwasher stink so bad?

There is a really bad odor when wash cycle first starts and drains into the disposal side. Then, the smell seems to linger inside dishwasher after dishes are clean. Odor seems to permeate plastic containers that have been through the wash/dry cycle.

Most dishwashers have a filter in the bottom. Check your owners manual, for it's location. Then clean it out.
It needs to be cleaned like Naomie provides. It also should not drain into the disposal side. You may have backup from the disposal going into the dishwasher drain pipe and fermenting in it.
I agree that it's possible that your problem is with the garbage disposal. Although it could also be possible your problem is with your dishwasher. Something plastic might have melted on the heating elements. If the problem was with the disposal, you would smell the bad smell when you run/use your sink. Check both ideas just to be sure.
