What can be done to cover an old coal pit hole in my concrete patio?

My front patio is hollow underneath. There was once a coal furnace under the house and they used an approximately 15" hole in the patio to shoot coal under the house. We removed the ugly metal cover they had "just laying on it". We put my sons sand box over it to avoid an accident of anyone falling in or tripping over the cover they had on it. I'm to the point of wanting a change. Any ideas?

You could fill it in. Put rocks and such down there and pour concrete so it matches the rest of the patio.

You could put a nice stone tile on the porch.

The metal cover is not flush. It looks like a part of an old metal door with even a hinge on it. It was a major trip hazard.

      There's no lip either.

I think my best bet is the fill the hole to make it solid underneath then maybe tile it like someone mentioned. It sounds like a lot of work but I'm motivated to do something. Thank you for the tips.

Call a few concrete companies and see if they would be willing to fill the space with some of the rubble they remove. I know a lot of them recycle the rubble but it's worth a try. Then you could fill the hole with cement..

Yes, William. That sounds like it may be my only choice. We been getting rubble from a neighbor's old remodel project and using it to expand our parking area. I may have to see if they have any left. Thank you much for the suggestion.
