Hi Carol, I recommend you use a stud finder to find the studs behind your cedar. Attach the brackets right into the studs. Your railing will be good and sturdy if the brackets are sunk into the studs. Best of luck to you.
Yup, I get it, I sucks at math. I know how to add subtract, multiply, divide, but Geometry always escaped me, but, I am a whiz at blueprints - go figure??? You do not need geometry to install a handrail, or shall I say I have never used geometry to install a handrail. Check your local code (standard for handrails), and get a studfinder if you do not know where they are located. Here are sites to guide you through the process!

yes just measure up 28โ-32โ from top step put bracket then from bottom stem put bracket and then place the rail and you will have it at the correct angle.
