Yes you can stack them and then use some type of adhesive to stabilize them. The weight of your pole combined with the weight of the chain and whatever you decide to put in it may cause it to fall otherwise.

Your timber pole will have to be set into the ground if you don't want it to fall over in a high wind or due to the weight of pots, etc.. hanging from them

If you put a 8 foot (pressure treated) post... 2 feet into the ground... it should be fine.... the concrete blocks would not be a wide enough base to keep the posts from being pushed over by the wind... think about pedestal tables... the base is almost always as wide as the top.... to keep it from tipping over.... and the taller you go... the wider the base must be..

Rather than chain..consider using closet rod brackets or plant hanger brackets... or you could use conduit clamps to attach black iron pipe between the posts... as chain will swag too much and is too hard to get very tight.

If you are going to pour cement into the blocks, I would put the pole in right to the bottom and then fill the space with concrete to make it sturdier. Do not forget to use your level to make sure it is standing straight. You can buy posts any length you require.

Thanks Joy - Can you really buy posts in lengths taller than 8 feet? I want to hang a long sign high up in our memorial garden at church. The sign will have to go up past an arch that is already there. That is why I am trying to find a way to use the posts but have them taller than 8 feet. - I am planning on using outdoor stencil paint on plastic venetian blind slats - and hanging them from a middle post between the posts - Thanks for your help - Shirley

Shi, check at your local lumber store to get what you require in the length size.
