Have tried several retail products, but none have done the job. Previous owners had a water softener, but the spots were already there when we moved in.

There must have been a chemical in the water softener which made the spots. Check with someone who sells the softener and ask if there is a way to remove the spots.

Try a solution of 1/2 vinegar and water. Spray on and let sit a minute. This will be strong, so let the exhaust fan run. If the glass door is not frosted, you can also test a Brillo Pad on it -- I use them all the time on my shower doors, but test first.

lime away, soak paper toweling in it, put paper towels on the water spots they should just stick to it. wait 15 20 min. use a non abrasive scrubber. rinse. if you use vinegar use the cleaning type.

the water softeners use salt pellets, some have a rust/iron removing property. it may also be a paint residue issue, if the other things are not working try a razor blade type scraper.
