Love chalkpaint, but hate bleed through! What to do?

I really love the look of chalk paint. So much so that I make my own to use on furniture redo's. I mostly use white and do not sand before painting. When I go to seal the piece, I get an ugly bleed through of old stain, varnish, etc. This makes an otherwise sharp looking piece of furniture look messy. I don't like that look. I don't distress in most cases and prefer a pretty flat white in contrast to a dark or medium stain. I have attached pictures of my latest project and how bad the bleed through looks. If anyone knows of a sealant that won't allow belled through, PLEASE tell me what it is. Otherwise, I may have to just begin painting my projects with a stain blocking paint (like Kilz) before painting on my chalk paint. NOTE: Bleed through is actually much darker than in pictures...

You can spray your pieces with a clear sealer first to eliminate this issue. A sealer is NOT the same as a poly--it is a sealer. Rustoleum makes a clear sealer in a spray can.

You can use a clear sealer to eliminate this problem. A sealer is NOT the same as a poly--it is a sealer. Rustoleum makes a clear sealer in a spray can--less than 5.00--less than 3.00 on sale.

Did you prime the surface? Kilz it might be helpful.

There are numerous brands of great quality chalk paint on the market. Some you do not need to prime for nor do you even need a second coat. Google chalk paints and you can read about them.

Use a good primer paint. It seals the wood and helps the paint adhere.

You can do one of two things, Use a good quality stain blocking primer. Or get a can of either Rustoleum, or Krylon sealer. Then paint with chalk paint.
