It looks like it's already painted white. If you can, I would maybe get rid of the carpet if there is wood underneath. That would brighten it up. Hanging some decorative mirrors in the hallway would also add the illusion of light and space.

I agree with mirrors. Can you add more lights? If not, perhaps you could get one of the new modern tracklights, and you could aim the lights in different areas. I did that in my cottage kitchen to tide me over until I buy more lights. After I pointed the lights in each direction, it made a huge difference!

Add another light and get rid of the dark carpet.

Have you thought to give the illusion of a wider space by cutting the height of the hallway by colouring the bottom 1/3 with a darker colour or paper adding a Waist rail or wallpaper border and leaving the walls above light. Add mirrors or Mirror Tiles both sides on the upper walls and or doors or changing doors to half glass? That should do the trick..........

I agree with getting another light but I think it would make the doors a little more interesting if you invested in some very small trim and added it to the doors then did a fresh coat of paint. It would make all those doors a little more interesting. A rectangle or two squares on each door would go a long way.

Expanding on your door trim idea, here are 2 inexpensive ideas using items from the Dollar Tree. Idea 1- Framed mirrors - arrange on the door at the end of the hallway to create a French Door effect.

This would reflect the light plus give you a great focal point. Idea 2- Picture frames: Using only the frame (save the glass, etc. for another project ), arrange them in a pleasing pattern to create a paneled door look. Paint to match.

Also, maybe you could remove the laundry room curtain to open it up a bit. Trust me, my laundry room is not ready for public viewing at this time, but there are many inexpensive baskets, etc which might make it do-able . Best wishes!
