What are the best plans for building a covered porch?

My brother built a deck on the front of my house, about 17 feet wide. I would use it more if it was covered. I need some ideas! Thanks.

First thought would be to check with the city/county where you live to see if you need a building permit to cover your porch. They are very sensitive about that, would hate to see you have to dismantle after you have finished.

I agree with you, it would be nice to sit out there, your brother did a great job.

You would probably have to have posts put in to support the roof and walls, from looking at the structure the end posts may not be adequate to support the weight of it. Don't know it you want screens or widows on it.

Another thought that just came to mind, and a much cheaper one is to have an awning over the whole porch, the kind that goes back to the wall when you are done with it.

    Best to you.

Thanks for the info! My brother and dad built it before I had knee replacement surgery! Love my porch!

You have a complex roof line to have be repeated for a porch roof. Plus your porch does not look deep enough to have such work done. Sandy's idea is good except is the porch even deep enough for such a table?

Right-I sure do. It’s a little bigger than it looks. I think! It’s actually 5.5 feet deep. Small table.

If you can find a rectangular pop up canopy that fits on the deck you could put one up. I use one in the summer but take it down in the winter. They last only about 3 or 4 years because the sun is hard on the top but for about 150.00 or less I can buy a good one with very sturdy legs that hold up in strong winds. The only problem with a square or rectangular popup canopy is that the rain will collect on the top and sag down. My popup canopy is a hexagon--solved the rain problem completely. However I do agree with another person who suggested a table with a big umbrella. Your deck doesn't look that deep so it would probably work perfectly.

Thanks-pop ups are too big-my porch is 5.5 feet deep. I’ll think of something!

Could you install a retractable awning over the three windows which open onto the deck?
