Native, Drought Tolerant Front Yard That's GORGEOUS!

We spent years fixing up the outside of our home - new windows, new paint, new roof, and even solar panels. But, this was, by far, the most amazing transformation we've done! The front yard grass was ripped out and replaced with a beautiful, modern landscape that is native to our area and drought tolerant.
I dreamed up a place where we could have people congregate and hang out. It turned out so beautifully! It is saving us almost $200 a month in watering our front yard in the summer! Definitely a big savings! Living in Southern California, it's a lot smarter with our drought to have it this way.

Something that grass lovers in cooler climates don't realize about lawn grass in our hot climates is this: we usually have to plant heat tolerant grasses so they can withstand the triple digit summers and fall. However, when cooler weather comes, many of those varieties turn brown all winter. Ugh, ugly! So we put up with a brown lawn or go to the expense and trouble of seeding in winter rye or some other grass that will stay green in the winter. This usually involves a lot of scalping and other physical labor in addition to the seeding, rolling, and fertilizing and, yes, additional watering to get the winter variety to grow.

We are in a severe drought here in Texas. I would love to do something like this but I think it would cost prohibitive and my dh and I can no longer do this type of landscaping ourselves.
