Wet ground to lossen it,then grab an old pair of panty hose and gently tie around all stems. Now dig around the plant but remember it has roots so not to close and gently wiggle it and with some digging and continued wiggling you can raise it up with your hands. Now place in new hole or divide and place in several areas. If the plant was the one with large leaves then keep that in mind for new area,if other plants were causing issue also keep that in mind. Host are very forgiving so don't worry about time of year or anything, it will come back if you water it well not over water it but just everyday if you don't get rain and soon you will be able to see it look better than ever. I love hostas my favorite. I stink at gardening and yet have great success with these because they are so forgiving. And they multiple and or if you don't want to separate it to many just let it become the focal point. How can anyone not love them.
All you have to do is gently tie the leaves up with something soft that won't harm the leaves, dig it up, have the new spot ready and put it into the new hole. Once you have it in place and covered, take the tie off and it should be fairly undamaged.
